Retirement planning as a business owner starts with connecting your personal lifestyle goals to the value and cash flow of your business, then building a plan that doesn’t rely on one “event” going perfectly (a sale, a refinance, or a banner year). Destiny Capital typically helps entrepreneurs coordinate personal cash flow planning, exit options, retirement contributions, overall investment strategy, and tax planning into one integrated approach so you can make decisions with clarity instead of reacting under pressure.

Start early by getting organized around what your CPA will need, tracking year- round profit and cash flow, and identifying major “one-time” items (equipment purchases, hiring changes, major contracts, or distributions) that can change your tax picture. Destiny Capital can help you think ahead about tax strategy and how business and personal decisions impact your long-term plan, while your CPA handles preparation and filing to keep you compliant. Check out our free OBBBA quick guide for information on how tax changes are affecting taxpayers in 2026.

A CPA’s primary role is tax compliance and tax preparation. In other words, filing accurate returns and advising on tax rules and reporting. At Destiny Capital our role is broader: building a holistic plan that can include retirement planning, investment management, tax planning strategy, cash flow planning, estate planning coordination, and risk management. Destiny Capital focuses on creating clarity and control across your full financial life and often collaborates with CPAs to align strategy with implementation.

Many small business owners can handle early-stage basics on their own, but complexity tends to grow with success – multiple accounts, inconsistent cash flow, tax planning opportunities, and bigger consequences for “good-but-not-optimal” decisions. A Destiny Capital financial advisor can help coordinate moving pieces into a cohesive strategy so your business growth translates into lasting personal wealth and flexibility. We’re always happy to offer a free consultation if you’re unsure what’s best for your situation.

Entrepreneurs often have several options for retirement readiness, using a mix of business equity, retirement accounts, and personal investments. The right setup depends on your entity type, employee situation, income volatility, and exit plans, so the goal is selecting options that fit your business reality and your personal goals. At Destiny Capital, our team is well-versed in navigating the complexities of business owners who are transitioning into retirement and can tailor a plan to your unique situation.

Costs generally depend on whether you want investment management, financial planning, or both, and on the complexity of your situation. At Destiny Capital, we know that not all business owners fit inside a traditional AUM fee model, and we offer fixed fee options for those whose situation requires a heavy planning focus without investable assets. Destiny Capital is paid through advisory fees – our team does not sell any products or earn commissions on any investment options. Our client service team is comprised exclusively of CFPs who have a fiduciary duty to act in the client’s best interest at all times. We believe most clients benefit from a holistic engagement that includes investment management as well as financial planning, so most of our clients are on a fee schedule based on assets under management, but we do offer fixed-fee planning for some clients where that makes more sense.

Destiny Capital frequently works alongside a client’s existing CPA so tax preparation, filing, and accounting stay with the professional who already knows your business books. The goal is coordination! We help you align planning strategy (what to do) with tax execution (how it gets filed and reported).

Your CPA is the professional responsible for tax preparation and filing, which is what ultimately drives compliance. Destiny Capital supports tax planning and decision making throughout the year (so you’re not surprised at filing time), but the CPA handles the official compliance work.

Investment management is important, but most entrepreneurs and retirees don’t just need a portfolio, they need a coordinated wealth strategy that connects business cash flow, taxes, retirement goals, and major decisions like buying property or preparing for an exit. Destiny Capital’s role is to simplify complexity and create a structured plan, so each part of your financial world supports the others, rather than operating in silos.

Business owners typically need a plan that accounts for uneven income flow, taxes, liquidity (cash reserves), personal wealth building outside the business, and risk management, plus long-term goals like retirement and legacy planning. Destiny Capital helps bring these areas together into a methodical, goal-focused strategy so decisions feel proactive instead of reactive.

Exit planning ideally begins well before you want to sell, because the best options usually come from having time to increase business value, reduce risk, and design a deal structure that supports your personal goals. Options can include selling to a third party, transitioning internally (partners, management, family), or planning for a slower step-back that preserves income while reducing day-to-day involvement, depending on what “freedom” looks like for you. Destiny Capital has helped business owners through all stages of this process, and we’re happy to help plan no matter how close you are to an exit, but have found that the sooner we can proactively plan alongside a business owner, the more we can help align your personal balance sheet and tax strategy, as well as help reduce avoidable “surprises” as you pursue your exit path.

Great question! In many industries, a person must meet specific educational, licensing, and professional standards to achieve a specific title. In the Financial Advisory world, we do not have this clear distinction. Each of the following people can call themselves a Financial Advisor:

Someone selling life insurance products
Someone providing financial education and budgeting tools
Someone who buys and sells investment products for a commission
Someone who provides simple retirement plans for a flat fee
Someone who provides comprehensive planning, investment management, and tax guidance on an asset-based fee

At Destiny Capital, everyone on our Client Service Team has the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) credential, which comes with rigorous educational and testing requirements, as well as a fiduciary duty to act in the client’s best interest at all times.
