Design Your Business Around Your Health

Design Your Business Around Your Health

I live my life by eight core principles. One of them is: “Take care of your body, you only get one.” Money can buy a lot of things, but it can’t automatically buy you health. Taking the time to exercise, walk, or stretch each day as well as making intentional decisions about what I eat are foundational pieces to my vision of true wealth. But good health isn’t something that can happen overnight; it has to be built and maintained. This isn’t a blog about fitness and nutrition so I won’t go into the details on how to achieve good health. However, I do want to talk about the role that being a business owner can play in building the physical and mental health components of true wealth.

As we mentioned in the article conspicuous consumption, being a business owner is all about customizing your life around your personal vision. One of the key benefits is being able to tailor your schedule around the things that are important to you outside of work. If the reason you don’t exercise is that it doesn’t fit into your schedule, consider changing the schedule to make the time. For some, like me, 5am is the best time to get that movement into the day. It is quiet, nobody else needs anything from me, and it feels like I am getting a head start on the rest of the world. Other people, like my wife, think I am crazy for getting up that early and prefer to get their movement in at the end of the workday. So whether you are an early bird weightlifter, lunchtime runner, afternoon yogi, or evening group fitness enthusiast there really is no right way. The best workout is the one that you get excited about and want to do every day. So, think about your favorite time to get moving and build it into your daily business schedule.

Mental health is just as important as physical. As a business owner, we are subject to many stressors every day. Making time to practice something that contributes to a calm mind is another item to focus your schedule customization on. For some, it is scheduling a daily walk outside. For others, it might be practicing daily meditation. Whatever you find to be a key for your mental health, build it into the schedule. I am a big fan of adding recurring private calendar items where the rest of the team can look at my calendar and know that I am not available. It guarantees that the time is available and already spoken for so that I never miss my physical or mental health practices.

Business owners have a tremendous opportunity to build our lives around our vision of true wealth. Take the opportunity to start building your schedule around the things that are most important to you.
